Our Homeschooling Journey: A Deep Dive into Learning and Connection

Our homeschooling adventure continues to be an incredibly rewarding experience, evolving beautifully with each passing day. What began as a new endeavor has blossomed into a cherished routine, revealing depths of learning and connection I hadn’t fully anticipated. The children are absolutely thriving, demonstrating an impressive capacity for absorbing new knowledge across various subjects. From mastering complex math concepts to exploring the wonders of history and literature, their progress is palpable and truly inspiring. This personalized approach has allowed us to tailor lessons to their individual learning styles and paces, fostering a genuine love for discovery rather than just rote memorization.

Beyond the academic achievements, one of the most significant benefits we’ve reaped is the strengthened bond within our family. Spending concentrated time together, navigating lessons, solving problems, and exploring curiosities, has woven us closer. We’ve discovered more about each other’s learning styles, strengths, and even quirky ways of thinking, fostering a unique understanding and appreciation. This enhanced connection is something I wouldn’t trade for anything, truly making this journey a profound experience for all of us, enriching our family dynamics in countless ways.

Of course, this intense period of learning comes with its own tell-tale signs: our pencils, once seemingly abundant, are now uniformly short, their erasers completely worn down from diligent use and occasional corrections. It’s a humorous, yet accurate, indicator of just how much writing, drawing, and problem-solving is happening daily. I honestly thought our household was well-stocked with stationery until we embarked on this homeschooling path. But as I get more comfortable with the rhythm and demands of this journey, I realize it’s not just about the resources we consume, but the invaluable growth and memories we create. It’s a challenging, yet crazy good one, filled with moments of intense focus, spontaneous laughter, and profound shared discovery that continually affirms our decision.

The flexibility inherent in home education provides an unparalleled opportunity to integrate real-world experiences into our curriculum. We’re able to pursue interests deeply, take educational field trips during off-peak hours, and connect academic concepts to practical applications, which deepens understanding and engagement. This holistic approach not only accelerates their academic progress but also nurtures their critical thinking skills, creativity, and self-directed learning abilities. Seeing their eyes light up with understanding and their minds grapple with new concepts is a constant source of joy and affirmation that we made the right choice for our family’s educational path.

A Taste of Home: Savoring Fresh Corn and Groundnuts

My taste buds have been on a delightful journey lately, as I find myself indulging in one of life’s simplest, yet most satisfying, pleasures: fresh corn and groundnuts (peanuts). This past Friday, my wonderful husband, Mr. N, arrived home with an impressively BIG bag of fresh corn, a gesture that immediately filled our kitchen with the promise of sweet, comforting flavors. Without hesitation, I began peeling the husks, dropping the golden cobs into a pot for boiling. The sweet, earthy aroma that soon filled the air was pure bliss, a harbinger of the deliciousness to come and a comforting scent that often signals happy times.

The moment the corn was cooked to perfection, still steaming hot, I couldn’t resist. I started eating immediately, while it was still piping hot, and frankly, I haven’t looked back since. Each bite is a burst of natural sweetness, a juicy explosion that transports me back to fond memories of summer days and simpler times. The experience is perfectly complemented by the arrival of fresh groundnuts, which miraculously appeared in my life on Saturday morning. These aren’t just any peanuts; they taste EXACTLY like the ones back home, evoking a powerful sense of nostalgia and comfort that is truly heartwarming. It’s an almost magical connection to my roots, right here in my current kitchen.

This epic duo – fresh, boiled corn and perfectly roasted (or boiled, if fresh) groundnuts – has created such a cozy, irresistible atmosphere that I almost don’t want to leave my house. There’s something incredibly grounding about these simple, natural foods; they offer a moment of pure, unadulterated enjoyment, a much-needed break from the everyday hustle. My tummy is happily stuffed with all it can take, and my heart is equally full. “I love you, corn and groundnuts,” I find myself thinking. And, of course, “I love you, Mr. N,” for bringing such wonderful, earthy treasures into our home. *Takes a huge, contented bite off the cob* It’s more than just food; it’s a sensory experience that brings immense joy and a comforting connection to cherished memories and a sense of belonging.

These seasonal treats also highlight the beauty of eating fresh, locally sourced produce. There’s an unparalleled flavor in corn picked at its peak, and groundnuts harvested with care, that store-bought alternatives simply cannot replicate. Beyond the exquisite taste, both corn and peanuts offer valuable nutritional benefits, providing essential fiber, vitamins, and healthy fats. It’s a delightful win-win – delicious, comforting, and good for you. This simple indulgence serves as a beautiful reminder to appreciate the small gifts life offers, especially those that connect us deeply to our past and present happiness, fostering a deeper appreciation for the simple pleasures of life.

Spiritual Nourishment: A Study Bible and Lysa Terkeurst’s “Uninvited”

This week brought a significant addition to my spiritual toolkit: my very own study Bible. This isn’t just any Bible; it’s a meticulously crafted resource designed to deepen understanding and engagement with scripture through detailed notes, cross-references, historical context, and linguistic insights. I’m incredibly excited to delve into its pages, allowing it to guide me through a richer, more profound exploration of God’s Word. Having a study Bible is like having a wise mentor by my side, offering layers of meaning to passages that might otherwise be overlooked, truly enhancing my daily devotional time and bringing the ancient texts to life in a new way.

Alongside my new Bible, I also received a highly anticipated book by Lysa Terkeurst, titled “Uninvited: Living Loved When You Feel Less Than, Left Out, and Lonely.” This book arrived from Amazon, and I’ve been eagerly awaiting its arrival, having heard so much about its impactful message. Lysa Terkeurst is an author whose work deeply resonates with me, particularly her insightful devotional write-ups for the Proverbs 31 Ministries. I am consistently drawn to the profound sincerity and raw vulnerability present in their posts; they offer a genuine and relatable perspective on faith and life’s challenges, making it my absolute go-to for daily spiritual inspiration. Their accessible content, often just a click away, makes it easy to engage with their empowering messages of hope and truth.

But let’s take a moment to specifically discuss “Uninvited.” I’ve had the opportunity to read several of Lysa’s devotionals that touch upon the themes explored in this book, and I can relate so profoundly to every word she writes. It addresses universal human experiences and emotions: Do you ever find yourself questioning if people truly love or care about you? Do you ever wrestle with the pervasive feeling that you simply don’t “belong” anywhere, or that you’re somehow inadequate? These are sentiments many of us secretly harbor, feelings of insecurity and isolation that can often feel overwhelming. Lysa tackles these difficult topics with grace, empathy, and practical wisdom, offering a beacon of hope for those who feel unseen or unvalued.

Her message is a powerful affirmation: no matter what external circumstances or internal doubts might suggest, you can always choose to live feeling loved. This profound truth, rooted in faith, offers immense comfort and strength, reminding us of our inherent worth and divine acceptance. The book promises to guide readers toward understanding their intrinsic value and belonging, reminding them that they are deeply cherished, not by human effort or approval, but by a higher, unwavering love. I honestly cannot wait for the kids to be tucked into bed tonight so I can curl up on the couch with a warm drink and metaphorically “eat this book.” It’s more than just a read; it feels like an essential conversation I need to have with myself, a journey towards embracing love and belonging fully and transforming how I perceive myself and my relationships in the light of divine truth.

My Hair Chronicles: Wig Woes and Braids Bound!

Oh, my hair! My hair! My hair! This has been quite the topic of contemplation and, frankly, a bit of frustration recently. The wig you see me confidently rocking in the picture above was a recent purchase, one I had high hopes for. However, despite my initial enthusiasm, I’m finding myself questioning its overall appearance. To me, it currently looks rather “jaga jaga” – a colloquial term that perfectly captures its disheveled, messy, and slightly unkempt vibe. I keep wondering, is it just me? Am I not styling it correctly? Is this simply how it’s meant to look, or have I somehow missed the memo on proper wig care and etiquette?

The afternoon amplified my hair woes. The wind seemed to take a personal vendetta against my wig, blowing fiercely with an almost mischievous intent. It felt as though some unseen, mischievous force was determined to rip the wig right off my head and expose me to public “disgrace.” The constant battle against the elements, trying to keep my hair in place while simultaneously trying to look presentable, proved to be an exhausting and ultimately losing battle. This persistent struggle has led me to a definitive conclusion, a declaration born out of necessity and a desire for fuss-free beauty: That’s it! I’m getting braids!

The decision to switch to braids feels like a liberation. Braids offer a fantastic combination of style, convenience, and protection for my natural hair, making them an ideal choice for busy lifestyles. They are known for their low-maintenance nature, allowing me to wake up ready to face the day without the daily ritual of styling a wig, saving precious time and effort. Moreover, braids serve as an excellent protective style, minimizing manipulation of my natural hair, shielding it from environmental damage, and promoting healthy growth. I’m already envisioning a fresh, neat, and elegant look that will withstand any mischievous gusts of wind and provide me with the confidence and ease I crave, proving that sometimes simplicity is indeed the ultimate sophistication.

This hair journey, from the excitement of a new wig to the decision to embrace braids, is a relatable experience for many. It underscores the ongoing quest for personal style that not only looks good but also feels comfortable and aligns with one’s lifestyle. It’s a reminder that true beauty often lies in confidence and authenticity, and sometimes, the most beautiful styles are those that simplify our routines and allow our natural beauty to shine through, providing both elegance and practicality without unnecessary fuss.

Profound Reflection: Being the Salt and Light of the World

This morning, as I engaged in my devotional time, certain words resonated so deeply within my soul, speaking volumes to the very core of my being. These powerful verses, taken from the New Living Translation (NLT) of Matthew 5, serve as a profound call to intentional living and impactful faith, challenging me to consider my role and influence in the world:

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.
14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

The imagery of being the “salt of the earth” is incredibly vivid and rich with historical context. Salt, throughout history, has been invaluable for preservation, flavor enhancement, and purification. To be the salt means to bring flavor, to preserve goodness against decay, and to make a positive, distinct difference in the world around us. The sobering question, “But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor?” serves as a powerful reminder of our responsibility. It challenges us to ensure that our faith and actions retain their essence, their distinctiveness, and their ability to influence positively. Losing our “saltiness” implies becoming indistinguishable from the world, thereby losing our purpose and impact. This resonated with me as a call to introspection: Am I truly adding flavor and preserving goodness in my sphere of influence, or am I blending in and allowing my distinctiveness to fade?

Equally compelling is the declaration, “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.” Light illuminates, guides, and dispels darkness. We are not meant to be concealed; rather, our lives, illuminated by faith and good deeds, are intended to shine brightly for all to see. The analogy of not hiding a lamp under a basket but placing it on a stand beautifully illustrates this point. Our faith, our values, and our Christ-likeness are not private matters to be kept hidden; they are meant to be displayed intentionally, providing guidance, hope, and direction to those around us. This isn’t about seeking personal glory, but about allowing our “good deeds to shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Our actions become a testament, drawing others to the source of our light and the glory of God.

These verses impress upon me the profound importance of living an intentional Christian life. It’s not enough to simply exist; we are called to actively and deliberately let our light shine. This requires conscious effort, unwavering commitment, and a willingness to stand out for righteousness. It means being a bold Christian, one who isn’t afraid to stand for truth and demonstrate love and compassion in a world that desperately needs both. It means being “aggressive” not in a forceful or confrontational way, but in the sense of being proactive, persistent, and unwavering with our generosity – offering our time, resources, and compassion freely and abundantly. It means being “aggressive” with our Christ-likeness, striving daily to embody the virtues of kindness, patience, humility, and unwavering love, even when it’s challenging or inconvenient.

For me, personally, this reflection spurred a specific commitment: I will start by paying more focused attention to my neighbors. This goes beyond a superficial wave or a hurried hello. It means intentionally engaging, greeting them even when their heads might be bowed in thought or preoccupation, signaling genuine presence and care. More importantly, it means genuinely caring for them – understanding their needs, offering help when possible, listening attentively, and extending the warmth of community and true neighborly love. It’s about translating these profound biblical truths into tangible, everyday actions, allowing my life to be a beacon of salt and light in my immediate community, reflecting God’s love to those right next door. This intentional living is about integrating faith into every facet of life, ensuring that our actions, words, and attitudes consistently reflect the values we hold dear, contributing to a more compassionate and hopeful world, one genuine interaction at a time.
