Beyond the Ring: Reclaiming Women’s Worth in a Marriage-Obsessed Society
Some years ago, a casual interaction among friends vividly illustrated a deeply ingrained societal issue. A friend, introducing another who was to stay in my school hostel room, emphasized with almost proud insistence: “She is married.” The statement wasn’t a simple piece of information; it carried an unspoken weight, as if declaring her friend a champion whose marital status warranted special recognition and deference. This seemingly innocent remark laid bare a pervasive sentiment, particularly prevalent in many African societies, where a woman’s value and standing are often inextricably linked to her marital status. Reaching a certain age without a husband is, regrettably, still viewed by many as a misfortune, a sign of incomplete womanhood, or even a personal failing.
The Unspoken Doctrine: When Marriage Becomes the Sole Measure of Worth
This cultural narrative is so powerful that it distorts fundamental truths about human value. If the verses of 1st Corinthians 13, often cited for their profound description of love, were rewritten through the lens of this societal expectation for women, they might tragically reflect a very different, and deeply damaging, doctrine:
- If I can speak ten different languages, possess extraordinary eloquence, and inspire thousands, yet I have no husband, I am nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate, my voice unheard and my achievements hollow.
- If I dedicate my life to speaking, inspiring, and changing lives across continents, acquiring a vast mansion and great wealth through my own efforts, yet I have no husband, I am nothing. My impact and accomplishments are dismissed, rendered meaningless without male validation.
- If I tirelessly engage in charitable works, striving with immense effort to forge a successful life and contribute meaningfully to my community, but I have no husband, I have achieved nothing. My journey is deemed incomplete, my endeavors bankrupt, and my very existence pitiable without a man by my side.
Such a perspective traps countless women in a cycle of self-pity and perpetual inadequacy. Instead of embracing the myriad opportunities and beautiful experiences life offers, they languish in emotional despair, feeling “husbandless.” This mindset elevates marriage to an almost mythical status, portraying it as the ultimate goal, the defining characteristic, and the sole purpose of a woman’s existence. It becomes the relentless pursuit against all odds, often at great personal cost.
A Societal Malady: Confronting the Pressure and Its Perpetrators
This profound societal pressure is a deeply entrenched “cancer” that has eaten into the fabric of our communities, silently eroding the self-esteem and potential of generations of women. The cure, though complex, begins with individual accountability and a collective shift in perspective. It starts with you – yes, YOU.
To the Accuser and the Comparator: Your Words Hold Power
You who casually insult single women, labeling them with derogatory names or accusing them of insufficiency because they lack a male partner – your words cut deep. You who constantly compare them to others, delivering the stinging pronouncement, “all your mates are married,” applying immense, unwarranted pressure. You who push and prod, consciously or unconsciously, until a woman feels compelled to “wear the Mrs. shoe” even when it’s clearly not her size, not her timing, or not with the right person. This behavior is harmful and needs to stop. Your judgment contributes to the very problem we seek to eradicate.
To the Flaunter and the Abandoner: Marriage is Not a Weapon
You who flaunt your husbands and brag about your marital status, not out of genuine appreciation for your partner, but as a subtle (or not-so-subtle) tool to diminish and insult single women – your actions perpetuate this toxic cycle. You who suddenly cease communication with a long-time friend merely because you are now married and she is not, creating artificial divisions based on marital status. This form of social ostracism is unkind and unnecessary. Your behavior contributes to the isolation and devaluation of single women, and it, too, needs to stop.
To the Single Woman: Reclaim Your Identity and Self-Worth
And yes, YOU, the single lady, also need to pause and re-evaluate. Take a deep breath, look inward, and recognize your inherent worth. It’s time to regain the self-esteem that may have been chipped away by societal expectations, by the feeling that you “should have” been married by now. Stop clinging to men, enduring disrespectful behavior, or “swallowing their bullshit” simply out of a desperate desire to be “wifed.” You deserve genuine respect, authentic connection, and a partner who truly values you, not just a title. Your worth is not contingent on your relationship status. It’s time to stop compromising your standards and your peace for external validation.
Beyond the Shadows: Embracing Individual Purpose and True Validation
The unfortunate reality is that too many women, both married and single, continue to live under the perceived or actual shadows of men, allowing their identities and destinies to be dictated by male presence or absence. This perpetuates a system that limits female potential and reinforces outdated patriarchal norms.
Woman, you are a unique and powerful individual. You have a distinct life to live, replete with your own dreams, ambitions, and purpose. Even when you choose to share that life with a partner, always remember who you are at your core. Marriage is a beautiful union for those who choose it and are prepared for it, but it is not the sole determinant of a fulfilling life. It is not an obligatory “must-do” checklist item to be ticked off. Consider the Apostle Paul in the Bible; he was unmarried, yet his profound writings and unwavering dedication to his purpose have blessed and guided countless individuals across centuries. His impact was immense, completely independent of marital status.
You do not need a man, or any external factor, to validate your existence, your intelligence, your beauty, or your contributions. Your validation comes from within, from pursuing your passions, cultivating your talents, building meaningful relationships, and finding joy in your journey.
A New Path Forward: Finding Purpose, Married or Not
While I wholeheartedly support and celebrate the institution of marriage for those who desire it, I vehemently oppose the societal tendency to shun or devalue the unmarried, treating them as if they are somehow flawed or diseased. This discriminatory attitude creates unnecessary divisions and fosters resentment.
Instead, let us collectively shift our focus. Let us prioritize the discovery and accomplishment of our individual purposes in life, whether we are married, single, or in any other relationship status. Let us empower women to define their own success, pursue their passions with unbridled enthusiasm, and contribute their unique gifts to the world without the burden of outdated expectations. It is time to dismantle the narrative that ties a woman’s worth to her marital status and instead celebrate the richness and diversity of every woman’s journey. By doing so, we foster a more inclusive, compassionate, and truly equitable society where every individual can thrive.
