Unveiling Lapiro: Denis Barika, The Self-Taught Cameroonian Chef Mastering Culinary Arts and Food Photography
In a world where culinary skills are often honed through formal training and Michelin-starred kitchens, Denis Barika stands out as a true anomaly. Known by his captivating pseudonym, Lapiro, this Cameroonian culinary maestro possesses an intuitive genius for cooking that defies convention. While many aspire to master a single cuisine, Lapiro effortlessly navigates the intricate flavors of local Cameroonian dishes, the sophisticated nuances of intercontinental fare, and everything imaginable in between. Before I had the pleasure of virtually encountering Lapiro in the “Cameroonian Foodies” group I founded, such versatile talent seemed confined to the distant glow of television screens.
Lapiro is not just familiar with the kitchen; he commands it with an unusual aptitude that speaks volumes. A glance at his food photography, meticulously capturing each dish, would lead anyone to believe he’d undergone rigorous, top-tier culinary education. The startling truth? He hasn’t. Denis Barika, a former Business Analyst and MBA holder, is driven purely by an unbridled passion for cooking, untethered by formal certifications or expectations. It’s this pure love for the craft that makes his creations so profoundly inspiring.
After weeks of admiring his exquisite culinary displays on Facebook, I knew I had to sit down for a deeper conversation with him. In this exclusive interview, Lapiro reveals the fascinating journey of how he discovered and cultivated his extraordinary cooking skills, shares insights into his partner’s supportive reaction to his constant presence in the kitchen, and recounts a memorable experience where his culinary prowess earned him a heartwarming, unexpected reward. Get ready to be inspired by a man who truly cooks from the heart!
First, why do you call yourself Lapiro?
I call myself Lapiro because “Lapiro” is my favorite musician. It’s an homage to an artist I admire. But my given name is Denis.
Who taught you to cook?
No one explicitly taught me how to cook, at least not in a formal sense. My initial training came from the most authentic source possible: my mother’s kitchen. I spent countless hours observing her as she prepared meals, completely captivated by the process. My favorite task was peeling Maggi cubes, primarily because it meant I got to enjoy the savory wrapper afterward! My mother was a stay-at-home mom, diligently preparing two fresh meals every day. Her dedication and culinary rhythm deeply influenced me, sparking an early love and profound attachment to the art of cooking. I can confidently say her everyday efforts laid the foundation for my passion.
At what age did you begin cooking?
My active participation in cooking began quite early, around the age of nine, when I was in Class 6 of primary school. My mother would take charge of preparing the groundnut soup, and my designated role was to perfectly boil the rice. In our household, we exclusively ate Ndop rice – I’m not sure if it was because I was born in Ndop or simply a family tradition. Those familiar with Ndop rice will know it requires a special touch and extra skill to cook it correctly; otherwise, you risk ending up with a sticky, fufu-like consistency instead of fluffy grains. Mastering that rice at such a young age was my first real culinary challenge and success.
Then, at the age of eleven, I transitioned to secondary school, which meant moving from my village to live with my uncle. It was just my uncle and my cousin at home. We quickly established a division of labor: I would handle all the cooking, and my uncle would take care of the cleaning. This arrangement became a pivotal period in my culinary journey. Through daily practice and experimentation, I rapidly learned how to cook almost everything, expanding my repertoire far beyond rice and groundnut soup. It was a practical, immersive education that solidified my skills.
You do a lot of food art too. Have you thought about pursuing a food-related career?
Indeed, I’m constantly told by people that I’m in the “wrong field” and should seriously consider culinary school. And yes, my passion for food art is undeniable. I have a natural knack for creating things with my hands. Back in primary school, I consistently scored 10/10 in handwork classes. If you’re familiar with cross-stitch, believe me, I can craft an entire set for a living room – a skill I inherited from my mother, who also pursued it as a stay-at-home mom. This inherent artistic ability seamlessly translates into how I approach food.
Lapiro described his vegetable creation: “I made her with vegetables. She loves carrots, leeks, celery, green beans, parsley, and her earrings are radish; I think she just got her eyebrows done, and ohhhhh she’s got cute lips!!!”
Lapiro mused about his egg designs: “Where I get the time to be doing faces on eggs, I don’t know!!!! That’s how you know you spend too much time in the kitchen……… and I love it!”

Beyond daily cooking and casual food art, I recently took on a significant project. My cousin had a baby shower, and I eagerly offered to create their fruit table. This was my first time preparing something elaborate for such a large occasion. I poured my creativity into it, aiming for something truly unique and beautiful, distinct from the usual baby shower displays. I was confident I would produce something spectacular, blending elegance with playful artistry. I definitely shared pictures and a video on our group afterward – it was a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience!
Hahaha, I know your work will be spectacular!
Speaking of unique experiences, I once had a local family invite me to their home to prepare dinner. I arrived that evening ready to cook, and I crafted a memorable three-course meal for them, serving it meticulously. For the main courses, I prepared fluffy rice accompanied by a rich Chicken Stew, and also a traditional Cameroonian delicacy, Eru. For dessert, I presented fresh strawberries and yogurt, served creatively in cups I fashioned out of apples. It was a truly delightful experience, making me feel like a high-class private chef. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment, especially because the wife had a generously sized and incredibly well-equipped kitchen. I was as excited in her kitchen as a child in a candy store!
When it was time for me to depart, the husband surprised me with $250. My jaw literally dropped; I hadn’t expected any monetary compensation, as it was purely a labor of passion. The following day, he sent me a picture of his wife enthusiastically eating the Eru directly from the pot, with the caption, “This is how you know the chef did a good job.” That feedback, more than the money, thrilled me immensely. It was a profound validation of my efforts and confirmed the universal language of good food.
How does your woman feel about you doing a lot of cooking?
Initially, my partner wasn’t entirely comfortable with how much time I spent in the kitchen, perhaps expecting traditional gender roles. However, she quickly realized that this is simply who I am; I won’t stay out of the kitchen. It’s not about proving anything or taking over domestic duties, but purely stems from my deep love for food and cooking. She understands that I have a particular preference for fresh meals and dislike food that’s more than two days old. I don’t care if it’s been in the fridge the entire time; I’ll freeze it and cook something new. Since she’s currently in school, I do most of the cooking, but honestly, it’s less about her lack of time and more about my overwhelming passion for being in the kitchen. It’s a dynamic that works for us, built on mutual understanding and delicious meals!
You seem to have a thing for photography too. Where did that passion come from?
Oh yes! My love for photography is another significant passion, and it’s something I inherited directly from my dad. He was an avid photographer and always captured countless moments of me growing up. Now, I frequently look back at those visual memories and cherish them deeply. As a gift, I gave him a really good digital camera, and he takes it everywhere with him. The best part is hearing him tell me he no longer has to buy camera film because his new camera uses a memory card – a simple joy that connects us through our shared interest.
My commitment to photography is serious; I make sure to take at least one picture every day. I also challenge myself creatively by choosing a specific color each week and capturing images of objects or scenes that relate to that hue. This practice sharpens my observational skills and pushes me to see the world differently. I was incredibly excited when one of my pictures was featured on Flickr’s “Explore” page, a moment that significantly boosted my confidence and intensified my passion for photography. Just like cooking, I haven’t received any professional training or schooling for photography. I believe it simply comes down to my innate dexterity and creative imagination. It’s a wonderful parallel to my culinary journey, where hands-on experience and intuitive artistry lead the way.
Would you encourage other men to cook too?
Absolutely, I would wholeheartedly encourage all men to embrace cooking! There’s an undeniable charm and thoughtfulness in preparing a meal and setting the table for your partner, especially when she’s about to return home after a long day. Imagine her anticipation of having to cook upon arrival, only to discover that everything is already prepared and waiting. All she needs to do is take a refreshing shower and then enjoy a delicious, stress-free meal. It’s a gesture that speaks volumes, demonstrating care, respect, and a willingness to contribute equally to the household. It transcends traditional gender roles and fosters a deeper connection and appreciation within a relationship. Cooking is not just about sustenance; it’s an act of love and partnership that can truly transform a home.
