The Turning Point That Reshaped Everything

The Day My World Shifted: A Journey of Spiritual Transformation in Buea

As I approached the bustling hall, a torrent of emotions surged through me, manifesting as a frantic thumping in my chest. It felt akin to a series of internal earthquakes, not unlike the seismic tremors that had once gripped the town of Buea. I distinctly recalled the aftermath when Mount Cameroon, one of Africa’s most active volcanoes, erupted years prior. Those geological upheavals had left indelible cracks – not just in the walls of buildings, but in the very fabric of fearful families, irrevocably redefining the essence of life for all its witnesses in Buea, a small yet resilient town in Cameroon.

And here I was, once again in this very town, experiencing a profound mimicry of those powerful quakes, only this time, they rattled within my own body, fueled by an acute sense of uncertainty. Was I truly heading to the right place? Despite my apprehension, an inexplicable pull urged me forward. Whispers and cautionary tales had always circulated in our community about venturing into “places” where unsuspecting individuals fell prey to dark spiritual influences. I had no desire to become another statistic in those chilling narratives. As I drew closer to the building, my gaze met a group of smartly dressed gentlemen in black suits. Their polished appearance and welcoming demeanor slowly began to soothe my agitated heart, transforming its frantic thumps into mere fast beats.

Shattering Stereotypes: My First Encounter with Modern Faith

I was courteously ushered into the building, which was already brimming with people, almost filled to its capacity. Finding a vacant spot, I settled quietly towards the back. The moment I stepped inside, the air was immediately palpable with an atmosphere of genuine love and infectious laughter. This was profoundly unexpected. My preconceived notions of a spiritual gathering had painted a picture of solemn-faced, perhaps even somberly dressed individuals, all taking matters of the Bible with an almost severe seriousness. Instead, I was met with jovial faces, radiating an energy that suggested they were utterly enjoying every moment of their lives. This vibrant event, I soon learned, was “Broda’s Day” at the Academy Campus Forum – a dynamic, campus-based ministry dedicated to guiding young people towards a deeper relationship with Christ. My good friend, Rita F, a fellow student in Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Buea, had extended the invitation. Never before had I immersed myself in such an uplifting and spirited atmosphere.

For as long as I could remember, my mental imagery of “born-again” Christians was heavily skewed by prevailing stereotypes. I envisioned men with scuffed, worn-out shoes, suits that appeared haggard and ill-fitting, often mismatched with their trousers, and perhaps even a hint of stale breath. Women, in my mind, wore excessively long skirts, maintained perpetually straight faces, their hair often aggressively tied back with scarves, and blouses sporting shoulder pads that seemed to reach their cheeks. Yet, here I was, seated among a congregation of individuals who proudly claimed to be born-again, whose appearances were not only appealing but radiated a refreshing sense of confidence and joy. The hall pulsed with an undeniable energy, an elusive ‘something’ that I had never encountered before, yet instantly yearned for.

Beyond Tradition: Discovering Gospel Music in a New Light

That evening unfolded as a profound revelation, a systematic dismantling of every stereotype I held, one after the other. Far from the traditional, hymns often associated with figures like Agatha Moses, which I typically linked with Christian praise and worship, I witnessed the ‘brodas’ – uniformed in their impeccably tailored black suits – perform a vibrant, youthful hip-hop song. The crescendo of their presentation arrived when one of them confidently stepped forward, delivering an incredibly “dope” rap that perfectly complemented the song. I was utterly stunned. Could this be real? “Dem di rap na rap?? For born again chorch???” I thought, hardly believing my eyes and ears. This was no ordinary rap akin to the styles dished out by mainstream artists like Eminem; the lyrics were powerfully and explicitly preaching the word of God. It was in that very moment that a critical realization dawned upon me: gospel music was not confined to a single, traditional style. It could manifest as rap, soul, jazz, or any genre that effectively conveyed its divine message.

The remainder of the program, aptly themed “Garden of Eden,” continued to captivate. It featured an electrifying drama presentation that brought biblical stories to life, a deeply insightful sermon that resonated with everyone present, and further sweet singing that uplifted spirits. Each segment chipped away at my old perceptions, opening my mind to a faith that was both profound and deeply engaging.

A Deep Longing and the Courage to Embrace Change

I remained seated at the back of that vibrant hall, nestled in a dimly lit corner within the Molyko neighborhood of Buea. From my vantage point, I meticulously savored every single moment of what transpired on stage. I sat there, immersed in deep thought, and came to an undeniable conclusion: these people possessed something vital, something truly extraordinary, that I was demonstrably lacking in my own life. It went far beyond their appealing appearances or their clean, modern music. They spoke about God with such profound intimacy and conviction, as though they knew Him personally, as a closest friend or confidant.

I wanted that connection. I craved that profound understanding.

However, when the pivotal moment arrived, when the opportunity presented itself for me to claim what my heart so desperately desired, I hesitated. The preacher for the night, with a compassionate voice, extended an invitation to anyone who wished to forge a relationship with the Lord, encouraging them to come forward. Despite the intense longing within me, I remained rooted to my seat, unable to make a move. Fear, doubt, and perhaps a lifetime of conditioning held me captive.

That night, as I retreated to the solitude of my room, I wept uncontrollably. Just the evening before, I had been at a party, adorned in a short denim skirt and my favorite salamanda shoes, playfully “flickering” on the dance floor with carefree abandon. Now, looking back at that previous night’s revelry, a wave of profound regret washed over me. I shouldn’t have been there. In that moment of vulnerability, I saw with stark clarity how truly worthless I felt without God, how empty and unfulfilled my pursuits had been.

After a period of intense reflection and wiping away the last of my tears, a firm resolve settled within me. I determined that I would take a bold, unwavering step the very next day – a step towards embracing the Lord. The following day happened to be the final day of the program. With renewed purpose, I made my way back to the hall, accompanied by my good friend Winifred, who, ironically, had been my host at that “ungodly” party just two nights prior. Her presence, this time, was a testament to a different kind of support.

The Life-Changing Decision: Becoming Born Again

We settled into our seats in the packed hall, and as the program began, mellifluous music once again filled the air, resonating deeply within my soul. The lyrics spoke volumes, painting a vivid picture of sacrifice and unconditional love:

Crucified, laid behind the stone

You lived to die

Rejected and alone

Like a rose, trampled on the ground

You took the fall

And thought of me

Above all

As those poignant words echoed, a powerful conviction, unlike anything I had ever experienced, enveloped me. It emphatically underscored my profound and undeniable need for God. Then, the preacher, Pastor Song Yusimbom, extended the invitation once more – a call for those who genuinely desired to know the Lord to come forward. Without a moment’s hesitation, I leaped from my chair, my dear friend Winifred right beside me. As I walked towards that altar, with each step, I consciously left behind years of merely existing as a moralist, and embraced the true path of a Christian. Pastor Yusimbom then guided us, asking us to repeat a simple yet profound prayer after him:

Lord Jesus, thank you for dying for my sins.

I know that I am a sinner.

Wash away my sins.

Make me born again.

Thank you Lord!

That prayer… I prayed it with every fiber of my being, with a sincerity I had never known. On that memorable Sunday evening, the 16th of May, 2004, as a first-year university student, I wholeheartedly dedicated my life to serving God. In that moment, I became born-again. I was truly transformed into a new person, because as the scripture says, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. It was a spiritual rebirth, a complete overhaul of my inner world.

A New Path and an Invitation to Transformation

That singular, life-altering decision has profoundly governed the entire course of my life ever since. It stands, without a shadow of a doubt, as the best thing that has ever happened to me. God, with His immeasurable grace and love, filled a void in my life that no human relationship, no worldly pursuit, no amount of material success could ever possibly fill. This profound sense of purpose and peace became the bedrock of my existence.

Now, I pose the question to you, the reader: How about your journey? Have you experienced this kind of profound, life-changing encounter?
