In the bustling rhythm of life, sometimes we need to hit pause, step away from the daily grind, and simply connect. For those of you who follow my culinary adventures, you know my kitchen is usually where the magic happens, where recipes come to life and aromas fill the air. But today, I’m setting aside the spatulas and mixing bowls to invite you into a more personal space. It’s been a while since I shared a truly chatty post, one where I open up about the little things that make up life behind the recipes, the unexpected turns, and the heartwarming moments that often go unsaid. So, grab your favorite warm beverage, settle in, and let’s dive into some of the latest happenings in my world.
Today, we’re taking a delightful detour from our usual recipe postings to share a slice of life, away from the ingredient lists and cooking instructions. This post is a warm invitation to share what’s truly on my mind and in my heart as the year draws to a close. From navigating festive seasons to embracing California’s unique charm, tackling content creation for my YouTube channel, and marveling at the incredibly fast pace of my children’s growth, there’s much to discuss. A Different Kind of Christmas: Why We Don’t Have a Christmas Tree
Listen, as December unfolds and the festive spirit begins to shimmer in many homes, you might be surprised to hear that I don’t have a Christmas tree set up in my house. In fact, since we moved to the United States, several years ago now, we haven’t put up a single Christmas tree. For many, this might seem unusual, perhaps even a little sad, but for me, it’s a reflection of how life and Christmas have simply taken on a different shape.
The “why” behind it is deeply personal. Moving across countries meant leaving behind the familiar embrace of my extended family – my parents, brothers, and sisters. Their absence during the holidays creates a different emotional landscape for me. The vibrant, bustling family gatherings I grew up with are now cherished memories, and establishing new traditions in a new land takes time, intention, and a lot of emotional adjustment. Without my core family around me, I haven’t really felt the strong motivation to put up a tree, or to recreate the exact holiday celebrations of my past. Our Christmases here have simply been very different, focusing more on intimate family moments rather than elaborate decorations.
Beyond the practicalities of relocation, I also find myself with some conflicting views about setting up a Christmas tree. While I absolutely adore the way a beautifully decorated tree transforms a home, making it feel wonderfully festive and bright, I also don’t consider it an absolute necessity for celebrating the true spirit of Christmas. There’s a quiet beauty in simplicity, and sometimes, the pressure to conform to widespread holiday decor can overshadow the deeper meaning of the season.
I’m not going to lie: there are moments when I feel a little left out, a little weird, seeing everyone else’s stunning trees light up my social media feeds. I’ve even made plans, several times, to at least hang some simple Christmas decorations just for fun, to bring a touch of that holiday cheer into our space. But somehow, with the daily demands of life and family, I just haven’t gotten around to it. And that’s okay. So, if you’re also finding yourself in a similar boat, perhaps without a towering fir in your living room this year, please know that you are absolutely not alone. There are many ways to celebrate and embrace the joy of the season, and sometimes, the most meaningful traditions are the ones we create from the heart, not just the ones we adopt from others. Remember, the essence of Christmas extends far beyond lights and ornaments.
On that note, one of my favorite Christmas reads, which always helps me reconnect with the deeper meaning of the season, is this insightful post on 15 fascinating things that happened at the birth of Jesus. It’s a wonderful reminder of the historical and spiritual significance that truly defines this time of year.

California Dreamin’: Embracing the Golden State’s Enchanting Weather
Ah, California! I don’t think I will ever truly get over how consistently beautiful and utterly perfect the weather is here. It’s simply magnificent. Can you believe it? Mama, we are literally taking leisurely walks in December! For someone who has experienced harsh winters and the relentless chore of shoveling snow for what felt like an eternity, this climate is nothing short of a dream come true. It’s an everyday luxury that I cherish and often marvel at.
Since we made the move to California, there’s been a persistent feeling, a delightful sensation that I’m constantly on a long, extended vacation. And I am not even joking! The sheer absence of biting cold, debilitating snow blizzards, and the inevitable dread of needing to shovel snow from driveways and walkways has transformed our lives. Here, the sunshine is often abundant, the air is crisp but not freezing, and the mild temperatures allow for year-round outdoor activities that simply weren’t possible in previous locations. We can take the children to the park, enjoy picnics, or simply stroll through our neighborhood, feeling the warmth on our skin, even in what is traditionally the heart of winter for many.
This perpetual good weather isn’t just a matter of comfort; it deeply impacts our lifestyle and overall well-being. The constant exposure to natural light and the opportunity for outdoor physical activity have a profoundly positive effect on mood and energy levels. Gone are the days of feeling cooped up indoors for months, battling seasonal blues. Instead, there’s a lightness, an openness, that comes with being able to enjoy the natural environment day after day. It allows for spontaneous plans, active living, and a general sense of ease that truly makes California feel like a little piece of paradise. This is a lifestyle I could absolutely live with indefinitely. It’s a constant source of joy and gratitude, and I feel incredibly fortunate to call this sunny state home.

My YouTube Kitchen: Updates on Upcoming Cooking Videos
You guys, first and foremost, I am so incredibly sorry for leaving you hanging on my YouTube channel! The thought of not having uploaded a new cooking video for a while has honestly been haunting me, a constant whisper in the back of my mind. I know many of you eagerly anticipate new recipes and culinary adventures, and I truly appreciate your patience and understanding.
The truth is, I have actually shot a few videos recently, but none of them came out exactly the way I wanted them to. As a content creator, I strive for a certain level of quality and clarity in my videos – from the lighting and camera angles to the precision of the instructions and the overall presentation. Sometimes, despite the best intentions and efforts, the footage just doesn’t meet my standards, or technical glitches occur that make the video unusable. It’s a painstaking process, often involving multiple takes, careful editing, and a lot of post-production work to ensure that what you see is both informative and visually appealing. This commitment to delivering high-quality content means that sometimes, progress isn’t as fast as I’d like it to be.
However, with Christmas rapidly approaching, I’ve refocused my efforts and am now working diligently on releasing two brand new videos specifically designed to help you with your Christmas cooking and entertaining. My goal is to provide you with delicious, inspiring recipes that will make your holiday season even more special and stress-free. I’m pouring all my creative energy into these, ensuring they are packed with tips and tricks you’ll love.
I should be able to put out the first one in the days ahead – that’s if everything goes smoothly with the final edits and uploads. I am incredibly excited about these upcoming releases and can’t wait to share them with you all. Please know that your enthusiasm fuels my passion! I will definitely keep you guys updated on my progress and release dates through my Instagram and Facebook stories, as well as on my YouTube community page. So keep an eye out there for the latest announcements, and get ready to whip up some festive magic in your own kitchens!
My Little Ones: Celebrating Milestones and Cherishing Growth
And now, for the heart of our home – my beautiful babies. It truly feels like just yesterday I was holding a newborn in my arms, and today, they are growing up so incredibly fast, reaching milestones that fill my heart with both immense joy and a touch of bittersweet nostalgia. It’s a whirlwind of emotions, watching them transform day by day.
Essie’s First Year: A Bundle of Joy and Energy!
My sweet baby Essie just turned one! Can you believe that? A whole year has flown by in what feels like the blink of an eye. I am so incredibly emotional because of how fast she is growing and developing. One moment she was a tiny infant, and now she’s a curious, independent little toddler, exploring the world around her with boundless energy. She is still so wonderfully chubby and impossibly sweet, with a mischievous sparkle in her eyes that lights up our entire home. Part of me, the sentimental mama bear part, wishes I could freeze time, just for a little while, because I truly don’t want to lose my baby to the relentless march of time. I want to savor every tiny cuddle, every babble, every clumsy step.
But then, another part of me is also incredibly excited and immensely proud about seeing her grow and discover new things every single day! So yes, my thoughts are often deliciously conflicted, suspended between wanting to hold onto her babyhood and eagerly anticipating the wonderful person she is becoming. Ah, motherhood in all its beautiful, messy glory!
Taking pictures of Essie these days is a total adventure, or perhaps, a full-blown struggle! She is always busy, always on the move, and simply cannot sit still for more than a second. Capturing a clear, posed shot is a mission impossible with this active little explorer. I had this adorable plan for her 12-month sticker photo shoot, but Essie, being Essie, had other ideas. The sticker was supposed to be proudly displayed on her, marking her age, but she kept grabbing it, pulling at it, and eventually, she even tore it! I finally just placed the torn sticker on the chair next to her and managed to snap a few quick pictures between her wriggles and giggles. Those photos, complete with the slightly crumpled sticker, perfectly encapsulate her vibrant, unstoppable personality. They are a testament to the beautiful chaos that is life with a one-year-old.

Salma Turns Seven: Our Little Culinary Star!
And speaking of growing up, our wonderful Salma also recently celebrated her seventh birthday! This girl, I tell you, is as obsessed with cooking and baking as I am, if not more! She is constantly by my side in the kitchen, asking questions, offering to help, and even making suggestions. Sometimes, I playfully tell her she’s threatening to take over my kitchen entirely, and honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if she does one day! Her passion for food and creating delicious things brings me so much joy and pride.
For her birthday, her big sister, with such immense love and care, made her a beautiful crown out of paper. It wasn’t just any crown; it was a handmade masterpiece, crafted with intricate details and overflowing with affection. It’s heartwarming to see the bond between my daughters and the effort they put into making handmade gifts for each other’s birthdays. These personal, thoughtful gestures are more precious than any store-bought toy.
For her birthday cake, Salma had a very specific request: she wanted my lemon pound cake. It’s one of her absolute favorites, and of course, I happily obliged! Instead of dividing the batter into two loaf pans as the original recipe suggests, I poured all of the luscious batter into one beautiful bundt pan, creating a stunning, celebratory cake. To elevate it further, we made some lightly sweetened whipped cream, soft and ethereal, to generously cover the cake, and then added a colorful assortment of fresh fruits on top. It was a simple yet elegant cake, bursting with flavor, and most importantly, made with love for our birthday girl. Watching her eyes light up as she saw her special cake was truly priceless.

Embracing Our Family’s Birthday Season
And just when we thought we’d catch a breath, we have a few more birthdays coming up early next year! Once “birthday season” truly rolls into my home, it takes a while before it finally stops, making our household a continuous hub of joy, cake, and celebration for several months. It’s a wonderful, albeit busy, time filled with planning parties, choosing gifts, and, of course, baking more delicious cakes. Each birthday is a reminder of the precious moments we share, the memories we create, and the incredible privilege of watching our children flourish.
Now, it’s your turn! I’ve shared a little glimpse into my life lately, and I’d love to hear from you. Do you have a Christmas tree up this year, or have you, like me, found different ways to embrace the holiday season? What are your favorite things to do in this beautiful, reflective time of year? Whether it’s baking, decorating, spending time with loved ones, or simply enjoying the quiet moments, I’d love to read about your traditions and experiences in the comments below.
Here’s wishing you all a truly wonderful week ahead, filled with warmth, joy, and peace. May the rest of your year be absolutely fantastic, and I look forward to connecting with you all again very soon!
