My Valentine’s Day Gift to You

There’s a certain magic that surrounds the memories of childhood, a golden glow that time cannot diminish. For many, these cherished recollections are inextricably linked to the simple, unadulterated joy of outdoor play. I, like countless others, carry these vivid imprints of a bygone era, an age where imagination was the primary currency and the world outside our doors was an endless canvas for adventure. I was once Little P, a girl who, despite her initial shyness, found her voice and her spirit amidst the laughter and games of her youth.

My childhood wasn’t defined by elaborate toys or structured activities, but by the spontaneous invention that emerged from everyday surroundings. One of my absolute favorites was “dodging,” a thrilling game where quick reflexes and agility were key. Friends would playfully hurl makeshift balls, and the objective was simple yet exhilarating: evade them at all costs. This wasn’t just a game; it was a clever tactic, a delightful escape from household chores that always seemed to loom large. The thrill of narrowly missing a flying object, the bursts of laughter, the sheer physical exertion – it all combined to create moments of pure, unadulterated fun. It was an unofficial training ground for quick thinking and nimble movements, skills that, unbeknownst to us, would subtly shape our approach to life’s challenges.

Hopscotch was another beloved pastime, a ritual that transcended mere play to become a significant part of our daily landscape. My aunt, who was just a year my senior and more like a sister, and I would spend countless hours meticulously drawing the hopscotch grid. We’d use stones, chalk, or even just our heels to etch the squares onto the dusty ground in front of my Grandma’s house. We’d redraw it, refine it, and perfect it until the lines became a permanent, almost sacred, fixture. Each jump, each landing, each carefully tossed stone represented a small victory, a moment of focused concentration and joyous movement. The sun on our faces, the dust on our bare feet, the shared anticipation with every turn – these were the ingredients of a childhood rich in simple pleasures and profound connections. Indeed, back in those days, we truly knew how to play, immersed in a world of our own making.

Comparing those days to the present often brings a wistful sigh and a shake of the head. The children of today, with their myriad of digital distractions, seem to have missed out on the unique charm of games like “dodging,” “sizo,” and “tabala.” These weren’t just names; they were vibrant experiences, each with its own set of rules, challenges, and camaraderie. The intricate dance of “sizo,” the rhythmic chants of “tabala,” or the elaborate role-playing of “play play” – these were the building blocks of our social and imaginative development. In “play play,” one friend would embody “Mami,” another “Papa,” and several others would be “Pikin them” (the children). Mami, in her maternal role, would concoct a fascinating brew of ground grass and saliva, solemnly serving it to her “pikin them” as a make-believe meal. I know, to a modern ear, it sounds rather unappetizing – perhaps even a little gross! – but to us, it was a feast of imagination, a lesson in nurturing and community. It was a testament to our ability to create entire worlds with nothing but our minds and the natural elements around us.

If you grew up in Cameroon, these descriptions undoubtedly evoke a strong sense of nostalgia, a warm wave of recognition for a shared cultural heritage. For those who didn’t, I invite you to simply immerse yourself in the narrative, to imagine a time and place where play was raw, authentic, and deeply connected to the environment and human interaction. It’s a universal story, really, about the innocence and wonder of childhood, regardless of geographical boundaries.

But the currents of time flow relentlessly, and things have undeniably shifted. The traditional games of my youth have largely given way to new forms of entertainment. Girls, instead of rolling up their skirts to tuck into their panties for unrestricted movement during outdoor escapades, now spend hours absorbed in the glittery, animated world of Barbie dolls on screens. Boys, instead of staging epic imaginary wars in the skeletal structures of unfinished buildings, channeling their youthful energy into grand narratives of heroism and conquest, now find their battles waged within the confines of video games. While these new forms of play offer their own unique advantages in terms of cognitive stimulation and digital literacy, they often lack the physical exertion, direct social interaction, and hands-on imaginative engagement that characterized our generation’s childhood.

We are, unequivocally, living in the technology age. And yes, for those wondering, Little P, the shy girl with a penchant for dodging balls and drawing hopscotch grids, is me. My own form of “play” has evolved significantly. While the physical playgrounds of my youth have been replaced, the desire for connection, creativity, and exploration remains undiminished. Now, much of my engagement and interaction unfolds on the digital landscape. I connect with friends and family on Facebook, conduct virtual meetings and catch-ups on Skype, share thoughts and ideas on Twitter, and, perhaps most significantly, express my innermost self through blogging. This digital sphere, while different, offers a powerful medium for communication and community building, reflecting the ever-changing tapestry of human interaction.
